Bathrooms are very special rooms to design. They are often part spa, part locker room and even part fantasy space. With all these competing ideas, finding a color that suits all of these purposes can be a challenge, so I thought I would break down some different color groups to help you make your decision. I have limited myself to the most popular color groups. I stayed away from the natural wood stain colors and super deep colors as I think those probably deserve a posting of their own. You will also notice that I have not included a green section. For me, green is a problematic color for bathrooms, it reflects light in an unflattering way and with a few exceptions is not a great choice for a bathroom.

Do not be fooled, although your bathroom may not be huge, a bathroom remodel is a big undertaking. Why? It just seems like a few fixtures, some tile and maybe a new light or two. Managing water in a home is one of the most challenging aspects of construction, stopping leaks, getting waste water out efficiently etc are all quite difficult, and in a bathroom that is used a lot for many years, making sure that happens correctly is directly related to how much you are going to enjoy the finished product. What I learned designing a small space

Many of you who follow me on social media (@cutlermark) know I have recently returned from New Haven, CT where I was tasked with decorating a dorm room at Yale. This was a little out of my comfort zone as most of the homes that I work on are of a much different scale. So here are a few things that I learnt from working in such a small space.

One part of that process is that I do not let them see the house for the last two weeks of the project. I am a firm believer that Interior Design is a form of portraiture, and that every room we design tells the story of the family that lives there. This philosophy can manifest itself in many different ways, it could be as simple as a collection of family photos forming a gallery wall, or as we did for a famous comedian, a collection of old carnival memorabilia.Sometimes it is geography that inspires me, like this Pied a Terre we recently finished in San Francisco. It was for a young family that did a lot of business in the city and needed a place for meetings and occasional overnight stays. So what better source of inspiration than the San Francisco itself!

In Defense of Quality

It is always with great fascination that I read the plethora of articles that extoll the virtue of spending less. It seems that every magazine or blog has articles about getting the “same” style for less. They have alluring images of great design pieces (that have equally great price tags) and then they throw in some images of things that have the same look for less.What really is the message here? Is it that good design and quality are totally divorced from cost? I would like to make the case that this is true. What you are not seeing in those images that are usually beautifully shot photos (perhaps retouched as well) is the true difference between the high and low price points.

Interior Design is a Moral Responsibility! I know! a lot of people are going to think that I am crazy for saying this, but I really believe it to be true. A moral responsibility is a duty that one that you feel you ought to perform, even though there is no legal obligation to do so. In my mind, there is no doubt that interior design falls into that definition.Let me share a story with you of a home we did a year or two ago for a charity in Texas, the single mom had fallen on hard times, was in and out of shelters and struggling to look after her kids. We worked with some local agencies and decorated a home that was found for them.
